A Unique Quality of Credibility

After recounting gradual evolutionary developments and major mutations that led up to the first human beings, The Urantia Book’s section on world history then provides a detailed account of both the cultural and genetic evolution of humanity.  When it was published in 1955, some of its history was consistent with scholarship, much of its history was in direct conflict with scholarship, and much of what it said was completely original.

Since 1955, new discoveries and scientific advances have been increasingly catching up to assertions made in The Urantia Book that were at odds with or not yet considered by scholarship. This pamphlet provides several summaries to help you appreciate the nature of these corroborations.

The Urantia Book also provides information on astronomy, atomic physics, geophysics, geology, and paleontology. The Urantia Book is a gift to humanity. It claims angelic authorship. There is no hierarchical religion associated with it and no one claims to be the author. Many aspects of its origins were kept secret. This was done to limit well intentioned, but misdirected, attempts to assess its credibility based on beliefs about how it got here. And it allowed for a more solid and lasting foundation of credibility to develop based on appreciation for the superior quality of its teachings and the unique quality of credibility that grows from the emerging pattern of corroborations.

Human Civilization and The Urantia Book

The Urantia Book’s version of planetary history makes sense of many things that anthropologists find puzzling about genetic evolution and humanity’s cultural development. It is richly detailed and insightful regarding the evolution of religious beliefs, practices, and institutions, as well as marriage practices, industrial development, and the migratory history and mixing of the various races. 

For over fifty years now, the credibility of The Urantia Book has been steadily increasing, but the last decade was especially validating. Though scientists and scholars may not be justified in using it as an authoritative source, this book does hold the intriguing possibility of helping them out to be more efficient in making new discoveries and scientific advances. The Urantia Book actually tells us where to look for various types of geological, paleontological, and archaeological artifacts.

Creating Fire

According to The Urantia Book, evolution occurs both gradually and through mutations that cause evolutionary “leaps”—new species. It says that humanity originated about one million years ago in the Mesopotamian region, when such a mutation produced a set of twins, a male and a female.

The Urantia Book recounts that this pair, while collecting some pieces of flint for making tools,  “discovered their sparking quality and conceived the idea of building fire.”  Though their ancestors replenished fire that started by lightning, according to The Urantia Book, the ability to create fire at will originated with the twins, the first two human beings, working together.

A 2004 discovery at the Gesher Benot Ya’aqov archaeological site in Israel provides strong evidence that human beings were using flint to create fire at least 790,000 years ago. Prior to this discovery, the best evidence indicating the ability to create fire came from sites in other parts of the world and dated from only 200,000 to 550,000 years ago.

Early Migration to Britain

The Ancient Human Occupation of Britain project (“AHOB”) was launched in 2001 to revitalize the study of ancient archaeological sites in Britain.  By 2005, AHOB researchers established that humans occupied Britain 700,000 years ago. This discovery surprised the archaeological community. Prior to AHOB, the evidence for early human habitation only went back 500,000 years.

The Urantia Book states that humans started living in Britain about 900,000 years ago and that evidence of this can still be found near the English Channel. This is where the AHOB team discovered the evidence that brought occupation of Britain 200,000 years closer to The Urantia Book’s assertion.

Adam and Eve

The Urantia Book says that humanity began about 1,000,000 years ago and that Adam and Eve lived about 37,500 years ago. It says they were genetically different—superior—compared to the rest of humanity and the authors recount that Adam and Eve’s initial intention was to create their own “race” and culture, and then systematically orchestrate the sharing of these genetic and cultural advantages with the rest of humanity. The Urantia Book extensively covers the development and spread of this culture.

Several recent genetics studies have produced results that closely parallel this Adam and Eve story in numerous ways, including the type of genetic changes that occurred, their sudden appearance, and the path of migration into the rest of humanity.

Gobekli Tepe

In 1994, excavations began at the Gobekli Tepe archaeological site in Turkey. This site contains architecture and artifacts from approximately 12,000 years ago. The artifacts are particularly inconsistent with prevailing theories about when and how the cultural transition from hunter-gatherer to herder-farmer occurred.

Previously, primitive culture 12,000 years ago was not thought to be sufficiently advanced to create the architectural structures and other artifacts recently discovered at Gobekli Tepe.  However, the Gobekli Tepe site is consistent with The Urantia Book’s assertion that a herder/farmer and early industrial civilization existed in this area, during this time, as remnants of the Adamic culture.

Adding to the intrigue is the evidence indicating this site was intentionally buried approximately 8,000 years ago. This peculiar aspect of the discovery parallels The Urantia Book’s account of inferior tribes that drove out this more peaceful civilization during that time.  Archeologists from Gobekli Tepe speculate about why the same people who built Gobekli Tepe also buried it, because postulating that an advanced, peaceful civilization was driven out is so inconsistent with current theories. But this is what The Urantia Book says occurred and it is remarkably consistent with the facts.

Vikings

The Urantia Book says the “white races of Europe” made the first contact with Native Americans in North America around 1000 AD.  In 1955, most scholars still dismissed the 700 year old written record of this contact because no hard evidence existed that the Vikings made it to North America.

In the 1960’s archaeologists discovered a Viking settlement at L’anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada that also provided evidence of contact with the Native Americans. Numerous sites have since been found, which support the original discovery.
